Woven thread by thread on a Kashmiri handloom, this striking Taupe-and-ivory Pashmina shawl carries its pattern built into the very cloth — never stitched on top. Diagonal khat-rast stripes alternate dark and ivory grounds, each band filled with jewel-toned flowering vines in pink, turquoise, orange, violet and green. Every colour is carried on its own small wooden bobbin and interlocked as the weaver follows a coded talim, the written notation that guides Kani work row by row. Striped palledar end-panels with upright flowering butas and a soft fringe complete a piece that reads on both faces of the cloth.
A Mughal-era craft historically associated with the village of Kanihama, Kani is famously slow — a complex design can advance barely an inch a day, taking many months at the loom. The result is wearable art: featherlight yet warm, with a supple, fluid drape that settles beautifully over the shoulders. Wrap it over evening wear, bridal and festive outfits, or gift it as a future heirloom.
