Enquire on WhatsAppSoft grey, almost hidden under needlework. Nearly the whole field of this shawl is covered in Sozni, stitched by hand in old gold, ochre and rose pink with touches of aqua: small flowers, leaves and paisley shapes packed close together, so that from a distance the shawl reads as a warm golden tan.
Beneath the needlework, the cloth itself is woven in Chashm-e-Bulbul — the “nightingale’s eye” weave — a tiny diamond pattern worked into the pashmina on the loom. It gives the fabric a soft, textured sheen, is slower and more skilled to weave than plain pashmina, and has long been prized in Kashmir as the ground for fine embroidery.
A deep band of plain grey is left at each end, and that cool grey against the gold is what makes the piece. Needlework this dense is slow, patient work, and no two pieces are quite the same. It is a shawl for weddings and special evenings, and sits well with ivory, camel or black.
