Enquire on WhatsAppThis is a Kalamkari shawl. Kalamkari means 'pen work': the design is drawn and painted onto the pashmina by hand with a kalam, a fine pen, before a single stitch is made. Here three colours each have their own part of the cloth. The field is a pale pistachio green; across each end the painter has laid a broad red band, and below it a row of black pointed arches.
Then comes the needle. The red band is covered in Sozni paisleys and vines stitched by hand in pink and soft blue, each black arch holds its own small embroidered paisley, and a narrow dark border ties the long edges to the ends. It is a striking piece when worn open, with the red and black falling at the hem.
Two crafts on one cloth means two sets of skilled hands and many months of work. The shawl itself is handwoven from pure Pashmina, the fine cashmere of Kashmir: feather-light, soft and gently warming.
